Coming together over craft beer.
Rather than a standard guys night we hosted an Oktoberfest Party. Here are many of the selections on hand. I am not going to go through them all, as several of them will be highlighted in later posts. That said, here is the interesting observations.
Pumpkin Beat Oktober
With the exception of the ShockTop Pumpkin Wheat, the pumpkin beers were much more popular than the Oktoberfests. I think is for two reasons. One, most guys are looking for flavors in an Oktoberfest that isn’t there, and two the pumpkins came in growlers, so were poured into glasses rather than from the bottle. Southern Tier Pumking and Saranac Pumpkin Ale were tops by far in my book.
The Only Real Oktoberfest Was Not So Popular
I had one German beer, the Spaten Oktoberfest. I think that it was a little to strong and lacking in traditional American fall flavors and spices to be embraced. Not a bad beer at all, just not as robust in the face of the other beers available.
The Next Day
It is worth noting for the sake of anyone who is used to drinking light lagers and pilsners that an evening of sampling much heavy lagers and plenty of ales will leave you feeling fuller and groggier the next day. I was surprised at how good I felt, but at the same time very… heavy.
