Coming together over craft beer.
When I have the chance to get out of town, either for work or play, I make it my business to find some local brew I might not otherwise be able to sample. During a recent family trip to South Carolina I tried a variety of beers, some from the area, others not so much. In this case, I grabbed a six of New Belgium’s new seasonal, Rolle Bolle. I live in Jersey, and it is ashame that New Belgium does not have distribution there yet. We can keep hoping though. So, I drove to South Carolina to get a Colorado brew. I have done crazier things!
Just as a fun side note, Rolle Bolle autocorrects to Rolled Volleyball.
This beer pours a straw yellow with a fluffy white head Atlanta about one finger. Mine had a slight chill haze which cleared up as it warmed.
There is not much on the nose. A slight sweetness, no hop aroma at all, maybe getting a little bit of fruit aromas from the monkfruit and soursop, although I have no idea what they are so I can’t place them specifically.
The taste is light, very ‘belgium’ in its overall profile. The web description says it has a little bite on the finish, and I would agree. Nothing offensive, but it is present. The beer is softly carbonated and easy on the pallet. At 5.5% abv it is not technically seasonable (I personally think you need to be under 5%) but it is easy enough that you could drink a few.
Overall a good, but unremarkable beer from New Belgium. They bill it as the perfect beer to enjoy during a lawn game, and I think that would indeed work. Worth a try if it is in your area, and I am glad I picked it up, although I wouldn’t recommend driving 5 states away just to grab one!
